Chris Brown is one of the most highly regarded painters of his generation. His use of color, the depth of his images, and the "palette" of the oil he uses, speak to the soul as as few others can. This work shows men walking towards Abraham Lincoln in the moments before his Gettysburg address. They aren't certain what they are going to hear, but from their hurried movements and nervous energy, you can sense they know it is going to be something important. As the lighting on the painting changes, the viewer changes the perspective from looking "down" to looking "up" at the men, hence the title.
