The Naples wine auction picked up some serious steam in 2010, raising $8.1 million for its much-deserving local children's charities. A notable part of that steam came from the top wine lot in the auction, Staglin Family Vineyard's (teamed with vintners Zelma Long and Mike Ratcliffe), purchased by the very generous Gibbons and Bradley families for a sum of $340,000. The Gibbons and the Bradleys will embark upon their prize trip to South Africa with Shari and Garen Staglin likely in 2011. "Now the fun begins!" enthuses Garen.

"The auction went really well," says Shari Staglin. Even in today's economy bidders rallied on June 6 to raise a total of $5.7 million for local Napa Valley charities. This year Staglin Family Vineyard teamed with Hyde Vineyards and Aubert de Villaine to offer a trip to Burgundy and some bottles of shared wine blends that were bought for a combined bid of $400,000 from 2 bidders, the auction's second highest single bid for a lot. Hats off also to Piero Antinori, whose lot raised a combined total of $1.1 million from 3 winning bidders."We're really pleased," says Garen Staglin, "to have supported Napa charities through the auction, in keeping with our Great Wines for Great Causes motto."
Naples Winter Wine Festival: Dreams Do Come TrueEven in a down economy the Naples Winter Wine Festival raised over $5 million for local children's charities. We are pleased to have been a part of this event again and to have contributed the top wine lot, #25, at a $220,000 winning bid, and proud to have helped the kids in such a significant way.

Shari and Garen teamed with Peter Paul and Jude Blake to donate the top wine lot of this festive auction. Going for $44,000, it helped to generate an evening total of $1.16 million for the Sun Valley Center for the Arts. The winners of the Staglin lot received a vertical of 3 etched double magnums of Staglin Family Vineyard Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, and round-trip flights aboard Peter and Jude's jet for a weekend getaway at the vineyard.
Aldea Children and Family Services celebrated the life of a great community servant, Allen Ewig, at their annual gala on April 5. Although Allen is no longer with us, his legacy remains: Aldea is stronger than ever, providing therapy, housing, and community involvement for emotionally and developmentally disadvantaged children and adults. The night's silent and live auctions raised a total of $175,000 for Aldea, with $45,000 coming from the Staglin Family lot, which included dinner for 10 at the vineyard, for three separate parties. When bidding for the original dinner reached the auction's overall high of $15,000, Garen offered a second, then a third dinner, managing to serve three bidders and triple the auction's take. To Jeff Menashe, Roger O'Shaughnessy, and the bidding team of Kevin Fitzgerald, Ron Profili and John Salmon, thank you for supporting Aldea, and bon appetit!
We teamed up with good friends Greg Gregory and Jeff Murray and Sam and Mary Celeste of Blackberry Farm to create a California-Bordeaux gourmet extravaganza for 8 people. The winner will enjoy world-renowned cuisine by the chefs from Blackberry Farm to be paired with wines from the library of Staglin Family Vineyard alongside First Growth Bordeaux and Grand Cru Burgundy from Jeff's cellar, prepared and served at her home. In addition, a 3-liter of 2004 Staglin Family Estate Cabernet helped to make it the top wine lot of the evening.
Headlands Foundation Auction, Westin St. Francis Hotel, San Francisco was the scene of a record evening for founders Peter Paul and Jude Blake. The total was $485,000, almost 40% above last year, thanks to a high bid of $25,000 for a dinner for 20 at our villa with celebrity chef/owner, Steffan Terja and owner Umberto Gibin of one of SF's hottest new restaurants, Perbacco. "We're looking forward to the chance to enjoy their wonderful food," says Garen.
The Museum of the Rockies' 50th Anniversary Gala set a new record at $985,000, almost twice their prior high, with Shari and Garen as the honored vintners for the evening. Our lot, a special cave tour and tasting and lunch for eight people featuring vertical of our library wines, was the top wine lot at $50,000. "Not only did we help them set a record, but we also got to experience fly fishing and horseback riding in the incredible mountains of Montana," explained Garen.

Staglin Family Vineyard's $1 million lot display at Naples Winter Wine Festival 2008 |
On January 26, 2008, bidders at the Naples Winter Wine Festival: Inspiring Tomorrow's Heroes were motivated by the children whose programs the festival supports to contribute a sky-high $14 million to the auction's causes. Staglin Family Vineyard's lot went for the event's highest bid of $1 million, a record for a wine lot at the Naples auction. The lot's winners will receive walk-on roles on "Desperate Housewives" and "Back to You," tickets to the Vanity Fair party after the Oscar awards, and a trip to Cabo San Lucas plus a 6 L of our new meritage wine, the 2006 “INEO”. Read the auction's press release. This represents the 3rd time in a row that the Staglin Family Vineyard lot has both been the highest lot in an auction and has achieved a $1 million or greater total. To our knowledge, no other winery in the world has been able to achieve this demonstration or our motto of "great wine for great causes."

Auction Napa Valley 2007, "The American Classic," was a smash success for Napa Valley charities. In total, it raised $9.8 million for youth services, health care, and affordable housing non-profit organizations. We, the Staglin family, are overjoyed to have contributed a lot that produced a $1.1 million winning bid for the auction, which was the highest-grossing charity wine auction lot ever. Together with the record-setting lot we contributed to last year's auction, we are proud and honored to have been able to raise $2.37 million for Auction Napa Valley charities over the last three years. We couldn't have done it without the generosity of our bidders, most importantly John and Sandi Thompson, this year's winners, and Joy Craft, last year's highest bidder. To learn more about Auction Napa Valley 2007, please read Wine Spectator's feature.
