Winemaker Fredrik Johansson at Harvest 2007
James Laube writes of the Staglin Family Vineyard Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2007, "A pure and seductive style, with enticing aromas of mocha, baking spices, melted chocolate, ripe plum, black cherry and black licorice that are supple, elegant, balanced, rich and layered, ending with an amazingly long and persistent finish. Drink now through 2020." Incidentally, this is the Cab whose "rapt, fascinating" finish Brandon Staglin compared to the finale to the classic Beach Boys album Pet Sounds. Congratulations and many thanks to winemaker Fredrik Johansson for knocking it out of the park with this one, his first harvest-to-table Cabernet. This amazing wine is due for release in October 2010.

Built in 1868 by grapegrowers John and Mary Steckter, it was sold to a third party in 1985 when Andre Tchelistcheff purchased our vineyard for BV. In 2007 we were able to buy it back and after the usual permit hassles, began the restoration in April 2008. The project involved moving the house so we could completely rebuild a new expanded foundation that provides a porch surrounding the property. The steep grades and soils on the property (great for Cabernet, bad for construction) required significant retaining walls, drainage, and other infrastructure. Visit our events page for news of the grand opening celebration May 1 that will also celebrate our 25th year in the wine business!

Garen with winning bidders at Naples Winter Wine Festival 2010
The Naples wine auction picked up some serious steam in 2010, raising $8.1 million for its much-deserving local children's charities. A notable part of that steam came from the top wine lot in the auction, Staglin Family Vineyard's (teamed with vintners Zelma Long and Mike Ratcliffe), purchased by the very generous Gibbons and Bradley families for a sum of $340,000. The Gibbons and the Bradleys will embark upon their prize trip to South Africa with Shari and Garen Staglin likely in 2011. "Now the fun begins!" enthuses Garen.
What an honor! Here is what they had to say: "With apologies to [other] wonderful wines...our choice for the Cabernet Sauvignon we would most like to take home to mother is Staglin 2006, a wine whose depth and richness comes with a very precise and inspiring delivery of the West Rutherford Bench character. A stellar achievement from a brilliantly run winery." Many thanks to Connoisseur's Guide and to all of our customers who have tried the 2006, our highest-rated vintage ever. These 375ml formats will be offered in the Private Bars of all Mandarin Oriental, New York rooms and suites. Mandarin Oriental, New York is the only hotel in the United States to have these wines available for all guests to enjoy in their rooms...
"Staglin Family Vineyard not only produces wines of quality and prestige but cares about farming sustainably and giving back to the community. It was this combination of quality and integrity that drew Mandarin Oriental, New York’s Wine Director, Annie Turso, to the wines. Imagining them to be a wonderful opportunity for guest enjoyment, she convinced the Staglins to make the “SALUS’ bottlings available and now Mandarin Oriental, New York is proud to feature these elegantly crafted wines."

Agustin Huneeus and Shari Staglin at Auction Napa Valley 2009
"The auction went really well," says Shari Staglin. Even in today's economy bidders rallied on June 6 to raise a total of $5.7 million for local Napa Valley charities. This year Staglin Family Vineyard teamed with Hyde Vineyards and Aubert de Villaine to offer a trip to Burgundy and some bottles of shared wine blends that were bought for a combined bid of $400,000 from 2 bidders, the auction's second highest total for a lot. Hats off also to Piero Antinori, whose lot raised a combined total of $1.1 million from 3 winning bidders."We're really pleased," says Garen Staglin, "to have supported Napa charities through the auction, in keeping with our Great Wines for Great Causes motto."
