In July 2007, Staglin Family Vineyard made a commitment to 100% solar power. "Now we're no longer an energy consumer," says Brandon. "When the days are sunny, we even produce more energy than we use." Our 164-kilowatt photovoltaic array sits on the leach field below the winery, generating enough power to keep the winery electrically self-sufficient throughout the year. During harvest and on cloudy days, the winery still uses more power than the array can supply, so it draws some electricity from PG&E's grid. Then, when the sun is high, the array feeds the extra juice back into the grid, which can then be used by all our neighbors.
"We do the best we can to reduce our winery's carbon footprint," Brandon explains. "Along with organic farming, it's something we do to protect the land."
A special thank you to Sunlight Electric, who did the great work of coordinating the array's engineering and construction.
